Ancient History of Cupping/Hijama Therapy
Cupping/Hijama therapy is a time-honored healing practice with origins tracing back to ancient civilizations. The earliest known references to cupping appear in Egyptian texts from around 1550 BC, particularly in the Ebers Papyrus, one of the oldest medical texts in existence. The Egyptians used cupping/Hijama to treat a variety of ailments, including fever, pain, vertigo, menstrual imbalances, and weakened appetite.
The practice also found its way into ancient Chinese medicine. The earliest recorded use in China dates back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD), where it was commonly used to balance the flow of qi (energy) and blood, thereby restoring health and vitality. The renowned Chinese medical text, “The Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies” by Ge Hong (281-341 AD), details the use of cupping for treating lung conditions and promoting overall health.
In Greece, Hippocrates, often called the “Father of Medicine,” advocated for cupping therapy to address internal disease and structural problems. Greek and Roman practitioners used it to relieve pain and treat various medical conditions.
Islamic History of Cupping Therapy (Hijama)
Cupping/Hijama therapy holds a special place in Islamic medicine, known as “Hijama” in Arabic. It is highly regarded due to its endorsement by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who recommended it as a beneficial treatment. The practice is rooted in the Sunnah (traditions of the Prophet), making it a significant part of Islamic medical tradition.
Several Hadiths (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad) highlight the importance and benefits of cupping therapy. For instance, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is reported to have said, “The best treatment you can use is cupping/Hijama” (Sahih Bukhari). This endorsement has led to its widespread use and acceptance among Muslims throughout history.
Hijama is typically performed on specific days of the lunar calendar and is believed to help balance the body’s humors, remove toxins, and improve overall health. It is often used to treat various conditions, including headaches, migraines, joint pain, and digestive issues.
